Silicon Valley is a community of organizations that serve the valley. It aims to facilitate cooperation among these organizations, promote their efforts, and make it easier for potential donors and volunteers to find causes to support.
I started this community as a consequence of my own search for ways to serve. I couldn’t find a site that focused on public-spirited organizations in the Silicon Valley, so I decided to create one. I have some experience in service, having at various times been a Red Cross volunteer, an evangelist, a student leader, a union organizer, an organizer of farming cooperatives, an activist for mountain tribes, an environmentalist, and a corporate lobbyist. I requested a Silicon Valley wiki on Wikia, but was asked to create my community in the new WikiLocal instead. “Silicon Valley” is the first community in WikiLocal. I adapted the Main Page format of the San Francisco wiki, then created the first set of categories and the Community Calendar. With the help of Mindspillage and Splarka at the Help Chat Room, I created an inputbox and templates that laid out a standard format - to make it easier for new users to create articles for their organizations, and to give community pages a consistent feel. I created the first articles from a list of Silicon Valley non-profits that posted community events in the San Jose Mercury News, and populated each page with some information about the organizations, taken from their websites. I'm working with Wikia ceo Gil Penchina to develop a webinar on how and why to use Wikia, using Silicon Valley Commons as an example. If you want to join the training, please email me. The webinar will be recorded and may be uploaded to the Wikia Help page, to benefit all future Wikia contributors. Leo|Talk 05:27, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
